The host session is still running
Get back into that session. Your hands, your worn gear and wherever you were standing are the three things worth checking.
Big Walk Lost & Found
If the host ended your game while you were holding or wearing an item, check Lost & Found when the next session starts.
For where each carried item normally comes from, see the Items & Tools overview.
One sentence from inside the game covers the whole rule.
When the host ends your game, anything you’re holding or wearing will be placed here at the start of your next session.
If the item was already lying somewhere in the world, do not assume Lost & Found has it. An item nobody was holding or wearing falls back on its own source or guide.
Three answers separate the documented recovery from the cases that belong to an item, a route or a connection.
What went missing?
What happened?
Were you holding or wearing it?
Answer the three questions above to see where your case belongs.
It is in the hub you start from, so you pass it on the way in rather than travelling to reach it.
There is no unlock step and nothing to pay. Walk up and take back what was kept for you.
Show It on the MapThe in-game rule names two states, not a list of items. Anything you were carrying in one of those two ways is covered.
Held
The item was in your hands when the host ended the game.
Worn
The item was equipped on your body when the host ended the game.
Things players most often have on them when a session stops:
Those are examples rather than a compatibility list, and an item counts because of how you were holding it, not because of what it is.
This is the one route the game documents, so work through it in order.
1. Were you holding or wearing the item?
Then it was kept for you and is waiting at Lost & Found.
2. Was it lying loose in the world?
Then recovery is up to the item, and its own guide is the next stop.
You do not wait out a countdown. The documented moment is the start of your next session, so reopen the game with the same host and look straight away.
Open the recovery checker“You lost connection to the host unexpectedly” is its own message, and it is not the same event as the host ending the game.
Get back into that session. Your hands, your worn gear and wherever you were standing are the three things worth checking.
Once that host starts the journey again, the recovery rule applies and Lost & Found is worth a look at the start of the session.
That is a connection fault rather than a lost item, and the multiplayer troubleshooter covers what the game reports.
Open the multiplayer troubleshooterItems on the ground are a different case from items on you.
The rule above only names what you were holding or wearing, so a dropped item is not something Lost & Found promises to return.
Players often see loose world items back at their normal spot after reloading. That is worth trying, but it behaves item by item rather than as one rule for everything.
A Backpack can go missing for two completely different reasons, so pick the one that matches you.
That is the documented case. The Backpack is waiting at Lost & Found at the start of the next session, along with whatever it was holding.
Then this is a sourcing question. Backpacks come from set places, and the Backpack guide lists them.
A Big Key is progression, not carried gear, so it does not belong in the recovery model above.
What looks like a missing key is usually unfinished route state: a key waiting at its cutters, a key already delivered, or a different destination than the one you are standing at.
Open the Big Key route checkerWork down this list in order. It covers nearly every case where the item should have been there.
1. Had the session actually ended?
While the host is still running the game, nothing has been handed over yet, so there is nothing to collect.
2. Were you holding or wearing it?
If it was on the ground or inside a container you left behind, the rule does not name it.
3. Are you on the same host’s journey?
A different host is running a different save, so their hub will not hold your item.
4. Is it still on you?
Check your hands, your worn gear and any bag you are carrying before deciding it is missing.
5. Is it a puzzle or progression object?
Tiles, rewards and Big Keys answer to their own systems rather than to this recovery point.
6. Did you lose connection instead?
A dropped connection is its own problem with its own fix.
Progress belongs to the host who saved it, so the wrong session can look like a missing item.
If somebody else hosts, or the original host starts a fresh journey, you are standing in a different save. Your item is not gone; you are looking in the wrong one.
